چکیده

We consider the following problem, which arises in the context of distributed Web computations. An aggregator aims to combine specific data from n sources. The aggregator contacts all sources at once. The time for each source to return its data to the aggregator is independent and identically distributed according to a known distribution. The aggregator at some point stops waiting for data and returns an answer depending only on the data received so far. If the aggregator returns the aggregated information from k of the n sources at time t it obtains a reward Rk(t) that grows with k and decreases with t. The goal of the aggregator is to maximize its expected reward. We prove that for certain broad families of distributions and broad classes of reward functions, the optimal plan for the aggregator has a simple form and hence can be easily computed. ∗Supported in part by an Alfred P. State aggregation for solving Markov decision problems an application to mobile robotics

In this paper, we present two state aggregation methods, used to build stochastic plans, modelling our environment with Markov Decision Processes. Classical methods used to compute stochastic plans are highly untractable for problems necessiting a large number of states, like our robotics application. The use of aggregation techniques allows to reduce the number of states to take into account, ...

Transformation of Continuous Aggregation Join Queries over Data Streams

We address continuously processing an aggregation join query over data streams. Queries of this type involve both join and aggregation operations, with windows specified on join input streams. To our knowledge, the existing researches address join query optimization and aggregation query optimization as separate problems. Our observation, however, is that by putting them within the same scope o...

Determining an Economically Optimal (N,C) Design via Using Loss Functions

In this paper, we introduce a new sampling plan based on the defective proportion of batch. The proposed sampling plan is based on the distribution function of the proportion defective. A continuous loss function is used to quantify deviations between the proportion defective and its acceptance quality level (AQL).  For practical purpose, a sensitivity analysis is carried out on the different v...

The Lagrangian Relaxation Method for the Shortest Path Problem Considering Transportation Plans and Budgetary Constraint

In this paper, a constrained shortest path problem (CSP) in a network is investigated, in which some special plans for each link with corresponding pre-determined costs as well as reduction values in the link travel time are considered. The purpose is to find a path and selecting the best plans on its links, to improve the travel time as most as possible, while the costs of conducting plans do ...

Sequential Sampling Plans for Use in Timing Insecticide Applications for Control of European Corn Borer (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) in Potato

J. Econ.Entomol.89(6): 1468-1476 (1996) ABSTRACT Sequential sampling plans were developed for use in recommending control of European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hiibner), in potato, Solanum tuberosum L., fields based on the distribution of damaged stems. Likelihood ratio tests indicated that the betabinomial distribution (aggregated) provided a better fit than the binomial (random) when th...
